ABSTRACT

Tunnelling is an art which fascinates minds of all engineers, geologists, planners and people. Failures and the problems may be regarded as challenges and opportunities for generating new knowledge base and thereby increasing self-reliance in tunnelling.

In view of the difficulties in forecasting geological formations along deep and long tunnels particularly in complex geological environment, a comprehensive empirical approach is developed for a smooth and trouble free tunnelling. As such, the paper deals the importance of selection of tunnel alignment and estimation of ground conditions, support pressure and closure in tunnels.
